Jacobs and Contemperary Art

Marc Jacobs is known for his sartorial fashion interpretations of trends in contemporary art.

The story begins where there’s one day in 2002, Jacobs was distractedly flipping through a christie’s auction catalog when he came across Kilimnik’s Mary Calling Up a Stone 1996, a portrait of a dark-haired young woman. For some reason, the canvas called out to the designer. Who’d never purchased a work of art before. Soon he’s travelling to international art fairs. Befriending dealers and artists.

His inspiration:
Quotes of Fashion Statements by Marc:
Jacobs isn't looking for deeper resonances to his new Edward Gorey vision. "It's just what turns me on," he says. "I am not waking up, reading The New York Times, and then putting that into my collections. I am not holding up a mirror to the world. I don't believe that's what fashion is about. It's about fantasy."
…. "Oh, I always think it's silly to talk about themes and inspirations," said Jacobs with engaging frankness. "The collection's just always about this youthful, angelic, idyllic army. It's comprised of a lot of things—big plaids, layered woolliness, gangly stockings—but really, it's all about how people will break it down and wear it in their own way."
Marc Jacobs’ brain is feed on art, fashion, music and encounters.

Teamed up with Japanese artist Takashi Murakami to produce the accessories for the spring–summer 2003 collection of Louis Vuitton.

Together with Murakami, Jacobs produced “eye love”, a collection of handbags that merged Vuitton’s traditional monogrammatic canvas—its beige and brown motif that included shapes of diamonds, stars, and flowers along with the company’s initials, LV—with Murakami’s modern, colourful pop-art graphics.

The “eye love” handbags became instant collector’s items.

Here is a video about Jacobs's Craze for comtemporary art

Art Auctions:
After fashion show he regenerates his creative strength by watch contemporary art works, go to auctions and building up his art collection and prepare for his next fashion collection.
Encounters, Friends

Sofia Coppolar
Marc Jocob's best friend and muse, Sofia Coppola."She is young and sweet and beautiful," Marc Jacobs has said. "The epitome of this girl I fantasize of."On set, Coppola sports a tomboy's jeans and designer sweaters; off, she wears girlish clothes that perfectly suit her gamine-like frame—baby-doll dresses, ballerina flats, and when the Academy calls, a Marc Jacobs column gown.

Jacobs:

On the cover of Interview magazine, Marc Jacobs, styled to look like Warhol. So, is Jacobs appropriating popular culture and turning it into fashion, as Warhol turned popular culture into art? Jacobs plays this down: "I'm just me. I do my thing," he says. "Who cares what the references are? I hate references, they're boring. If a girl wants to wear it, then it's valid.

It is said that Marc Jacobs's living room is accented fluffy white life-size sculpture of a sheep (the work of Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne) … From where he was sitting on the sofa, Jacobs could see works of art by Andy Warhol, Francis Picabia, Georges Braque, John Currin, Elizabeth Peyton, David Hockney, Ed Ruscha, and Richard Prince.

Owing to his craze on Comtemporary Art, we can always see his influence from comtemporary art on LV, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs' collections as well!

Grunge Look:
Miscellaneous:
He has a habit of asking everything in multiple colours. Thus, every pair of shorts and jackets appear at least in six different colours, but not all would be shown.
Inspired by macaroons, Yayoi Kasama’s polka dots, bottle tops or even plates; he and his design team were laying pastel leather dots on a bag model for hours to examining the design.

Conclusion Of Marc By Marc Jacobs

According to analysis all the season and its color family, we believed that the brand is usually based on

[1] Achromatic Color,

[2] Primary Color,

[3] Analogous Colo
r in Red + Violet + Blue and

[4] Split Comp
limentary Color in Red + Violet + Blue --> Yellow,

[5] Balance of Color, and
[6] Harmony of Color

for further develop their collection.

Color Family of the collection

[2] Continuation the current color into the coming season.
You can easy to find out this element; especially after 02’F/W, some of those color just get a slightly difference between all seasons (i.e. same hue with various level of fullness, etc)

Due to the principle of Harmony would be easier to bring the boredom or conflict, and the direction of Marc by Marc Jacobs (compare with the main line, MMJ is much more cheap, chin also energetic). That’s why we decived into base color family and second color family to give another analysis.

[3] Accent Color
The Accent color family also follows the main principle,

[1] Achromatic Color,
[2] Primary Color,

[3] Analogous Color in Red + Violet + Blue and
[4] Split Complimentary Color in Red + Violet + Blue --> Yellow,

Color Family for accessary

So what’s the difference between them???
Its all about the color is artificial or not.
The artificial color in the principle which call Novelty; it’s argues to the harmonious or balance color but the unexpected combination do can draw people’s attention.

So what will happen if the main and accent color family combined together?
It will appear……
- Monochromatic,
- Contrast,
- Analogous,
- Complimentary, Double Complimentary, Adjacent Complimentary,
- Single/Double/Triad/Tetrad Split Complimentary,
……………………………………………………………………
………………………………………………………..
………………………………………….

No matter how many combinations or possibility there are, but this brand will still keep on using the Main color family and the theories to further develop their collection!!!

Marc By Marc Jacobs - The Designer, The Brand

In the following posts, our group is going to have a research study on the fashion brand - Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Marc Jacobs (born April 9, 1963 in New York City) is an American Fashion designer.
He is the head designer for Marc Jacobs, as well as the diffusion line Marc by Marc Jacobs.
Jacobs is currently the Creative Director of the prestigious French design house Louis Vuitton.
He is also known as the ‘crown prince’ of the fashion world.

Marc By Marc Jacobs
The Marc by Marc Jacobs collection includes Women, Men, Timepieces and eyewear collections.

This collection includes many of the designer's coveted details, including vintage lines, girly details like puff sleeves and quirky oversized buttons. His cult brand of retro-chic is also stamped on a must-have accessories line, which includes bags, shoes and off-beat timepieces.

The LOGO
Black “MARC” Follow by grey “BY MARC JACOBS”
Which is in Acromatic Color Scheme!!

The Packages

Not just the logo,
even the shopping bag and the shoes box are in Black and white.

Need more proof for his "Achromatic" addiction?
Here are some photoes of Marc Jacobs......

The Colors used in the photoes were mainly variations in lightness and darkness of black, gray and white.

This scheme depends on contrast.
It not only presents a professional impression but also looksclean and elegant but produces a stark, harsh effect, often meant to portray surrealism.
Some colors were added as an accent(Red and blue).

Here are the advertisement of Marc By Marc Jacobs's Vintage Line.

We can see the photos were adjusted to low hue, low intensity and in low value to give a vintage look.
